Shoal
An Exhibition of Recycled Glass Fish
14th June – 14th July 2019
Foyer Bar, Cliffs Pavilion, Westcliff-on-Sea
In Shoal I used the dramatic backdrop of the Thames Estuary to showcase an installation of around 100 glass fish, which were displayed in the windows of the Foyer Bar of the Cliffs Pavilion. They were hung on almost invisible wires with natural light filtering through them, changing constantly according to the time of day and atmospheric conditions. Although I had exhibited in London and overseas for many years, this was my first exhibition in my hometown. It was a double first, as the Cliffs Pavilion had not staged an exhibition like this before.
The main theme of the exhibition was sustainability. This was seen in both the materials used and the fish themselves. The fish were made from recycled wine and water bottles. The types of fish displayed can all be found around our coasts and are species that conservationists recommend should be fished sustainably. Shoal was also a celebration of our seaside heritage – as a fishing community and as a place to cherish and enjoy.
