Gilded Eggs
In my quest to create glass from recycled objects and produce close to zero waste, I have experimented with a variety of organic materials, with varying degrees of success. After several years I turned to the egg…
Featured in art throughout time and across civilizations, the egg is rich with symbolism. It is also quite different from the other materials I had been working with, the shell being mineral rather than organic.
I see my gilded eggs as having many layers of meaning. They started off as everyday ordinary egg shells destined for the compost bin. I have transformed them into works of art in a wide array of colours, elevated with gold leaf into something precious. They can be seen as celebrating the importance of eggs in our cooking and culture. They also invite the viewer to consider the significance of eggs in a broader sense.
The eggs are made using medium or large hens’ eggs, so their size reflects this.
Most of them are made from recycled glass. They are sand-cast and gilded with 22ct gold leaf.
The photos below show typical examples of the eggs and display options. If you are interested in buying a egg, please email me and I will send you photographs of the ones that I currently have available for sale. Prices exclude postage and packing, which will be charged at cost.
