Hanging in the dramatic windows of the Cliffs Pavilion Foyer Bar and illuminated by the sun and sky, “Ebb & Flow” takes its inspiration from the natural sandscapes shaped by the tides at Leigh-on-Sea.  Local artist Louise Truslow has used the scenes that she sees every day from her studio to create a series of 40 glass panels. 

The Isle of Grain and the distant North Downs form the horizon, floating between the sky and the ever-changing estuary.  In the foreground are sand waves and channels of water that are exposed at low tide.  Patterns with varying intensity of shade and colour highlight the differing shapes of the sand banks.  Wherever there is water or sky the glass is clear, so that hung in windows these sections take on the atmospheric conditions of the day and constantly change.  

The design is added to the panels by using mixtures of coloured glass powders.  These are applied in several stages, with the water channels added midway through the process.  Once the design is finalised the piece is fired in a kiln for approximately 24 hours. 

Louise describes her work as impressionistic.  She says “Whilst the pieces are clearly representational, I am not trying to produce an exact reproduction of the scene.  I am more interested in capturing the atmosphere.”

Whilst researching this project Louise was intrigued to discover that there is more to sand waves than she realised.  “Not only can they migrate and change orientation, but during storms certain signature patterns appear – particularly one that looks like a tuning fork.  I have a couple of panels with those in!”  

“Ebb & Flow” will run from 3rd July – 29th September 2022.
